How to Sell or Consign Your Clothes in Chicago

If your closet is full, you have several ways to turn clothes into cash or store credit. The best option depends on how quickly you want the money and how much the items are worth.

Option 1: Buy-sell-trade stores

This is usually the fastest route. Staff look through your items and offer a price for what they want. Buffalo Exchange, Crossroads and 2nd STREET all operate in Chicago. Expect them to choose only part of what you bring, based on current demand.

Option 2: Consignment

Consignment can pay more for good pieces, but you're paid only after an item sells, and it can take longer. Terms differ between shops, so ask about your share, how long items stay on the floor and what happens to anything unsold. Some shops work by appointment.

Option 3: Donate

If an item isn't worth selling, a charity shop can still give it a second life. Many list donation drop-offs, and you can use the Donation drop-off option under Store Features in our directory to find them. Ask for a receipt if you plan to claim a tax deduction, and consider speaking to a tax professional about whether it applies to you.

How to prepare your items

  • Wash or clean everything first
  • Repair small problems such as loose buttons
  • Fold or hang items neatly, without pet hair or odors
  • Bring current-season pieces where you can
  • Check each shop's buying hours and rules before you go
